During this Western period of festivities we would like to warn ESL Teachers looking for positions in Saudi Arabia or the wider Middle East region of the need to check out the source of adverts offering positions.
Like elsewhere on the internet fraudsters are about and the regulatory authorities seem powerless to stop them. Whenever we encounter likely frauds we report them but even where one is killed off another springs up.
This is a global problem, but any ESL Teachers reading this would be well advised to read this link highlighting the problem.
A few basic steps should be taken on any Job application:
- Check the advert, if it asks for any money up front do not apply.
- Use the application email address and check back to the website, does it look legitimate?
- Look at other activity on the website - is there information about the jobs, website links help articles etc? if none be careful. Fraudsters tend to be lazy.
- Any recruiter using a non website email address should be treated with caution. It does happen in the Middle East, but you are right to be suspicious.
- If the advert is on a free to use job board be cautious - we use them ourselves but...................... think about it.
- Many legitimate recruiters do disclose the name of clients but the use of a well known name does not mean they are appointed something we ourselves have pointed out to clients but this remains an issue.
- If an advert lists an international dialing code of 0035 this will be fraud as no such code exists.
There are 1000's of ESL jobs in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East and those interested can pre register with ourselves which includes ESL teaching positions at universities throughout Saudi Arabia or any for any of the current positions advertised.
Good luck, but please do be careful and whilst the Middle East does tend to leave everything to the last minute you should regard job applications as a journey and not a race and keep your hands in your pocket and never pay out for anything other than any fees to get a visa (which should be reimbursed shortly after arrival) and only do that when you have received and signed a contract of employment.
