The following position is for a Rudder & Propeller Section Head for a Shipbuilding & Repair Company based in Bahrain.  This is a permanent position and a tailored contract will be negotiated. Our client is seeking a candidate with the following 

  • You will need a degree in Mechanical Engineering and proven experience of running a Rudder & Propeller Section within a Ship Repair establishment at Section Head level

Responsibilities will include:-

  • Be responsible for all aspects of repairs to Main Propulsion Shafting, Propellers, Thrusters, Rudders and Steering Machinery
  • Co-operate with the Ship Repair Coordinator, Ships staff and Superintendent in order to :
    • Identify work.
    • Define priorities and monitor distribution of manpower accordingly.
    • Provide solutions to technical problems arising during work.
    • Discuss availability of spare parts with Ship's Representatives and Ship Repair Coordinator.
    • To carry out trials and tests.
  • Ensure safe working practices are maintained at all times.
  • Ensure an acceptable standard of Quality, Environmental, OHSAS and Security Management System is maintained in accordance with recognized working practices and the Company’s QEHS&S Manual and Policy.
  • Receive work specifications from Mechanical & Piping Department Head and assist him to develop working programme for repairs.
  • Identify the work onboard with Ship Repair Coordinator, Superintendent and Ship's Staff and discuss ways and methods for carrying out jobs, attend Class inspections and clear any arising points.
  • Exercise overall supervision of the work relevant to Main Propulsion Shafting, Propellers, Thrusters, Rudders and Steering Machinery.
  • Define priorities and organize distribution of men accordingly.
  • Co-ordinate the work between trades to ensure maximum utilization of manpower.
  • Assist Supervisors to solve technical problems as and when required and instruct staff on procedures and tools to use. Whenever required, liaise with manufactures’ specialists.
  • Look after and maintain tools and lifting equipment for safe and efficient execution of repairs.
  • Co-operate with the Mechanical Workshop Section Head in order to co-ordinate repairs of the items brought ashore according to the general programme.
  • On an annual basis prepare individual appraisals for all subordinate staff and workforce and recommend training requirements.
  • Maintain / Implement Company’s Rules and Safe working procedures.
  • If required attend daily meetings onboard with the Owner’s Representatives and Ship Coordinators in order to follow up progress of the work. Discuss and agree on phases of work, programmes and job completion dates.
  • Report regularly to the Department Head on the work done as well as on any problems.
  • Programme the trials and tests of machinery at the end of the repairs and supervise same on behalf of the Yard.
  • Co-operate with the Ship Repair Coordinator in drafting the description of the work.
  • Ensure a high standard of order and cleanliness is maintained throughout the Rudder and Propeller equipment store.
  • Maintain records in accordance with "Lips" contract for Propeller repairs and  Blohm + Voss" contract for Simplex Seals.
  • Maintain Quality as outlined within the Quality System Procedures Manual.
